Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create the film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still in university. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the garbage belonging to one of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
